Two fenced banyan trees give a centre to the open space behind the Yogyakarta palace. The South Square, also called Alun-Alun Kidul or Pengkeran, forms part of the palace spatial arrangement. The official palace website describes its former use for soldiers' training and troop inspections before Garebeg. A September 2021 archive photograph shows the banyans, surrounding buildings and people gathering on the square. From its edges, visitors can observe the relationship between the city layout, trees and everyday life. This remains a distinct cultural space; the North Square and visits inside the palace are separate places.
