In Sambirejo, Candi Ijo occupies the western slope of a hill in Prambanan, Sleman. Views towards the lower plain give context to its stepped courtyards: the landscape helps explain the arrangement of the complex.
This Hindu site is thought to have been built around 850–900 CE. Seventeen buildings and structures occupy eleven terraces. On the highest terrace, the main temple faces three smaller perwara temples. The lingga and yoni inside the main chamber, together with the Nandi statue in the central perwara, help reveal its religious character.
Notice the change in scale between courtyard and doorway, then the carved stone details around the buildings. Photographs of a perwara and the objects within the chambers show different aspects of the same place. Explore the arrangement through areas opened by staff, treating the historic stonework with care.
