Why it matters

At Nglanggeran Ancient Volcano, hiking trails lead among huge rocks and trees towards viewpoints in the hills. The site lies in Nglanggeran, Patuk, Gunungkidul Regency. According to Gunungkidul Tourism Office, rocks formed by ancient volcanic activity were fractured, displaced and eroded into the hills seen today. Their shapes offer a closer look at the area's geological history.

Tourism here has grown alongside local efforts to care for the landscape. The village profile on Jadesta records conservation work from 1999 and more active tourism development from 2007. Walk at a pace suited to your ability and the weather, and follow paths opened by the operator. Embung Nglanggeran and activities in the surrounding village can be separate outings; this page focuses on the ancient volcanic site and hiking among its rocks.
