Sambisari shifts the viewpoint: its temple buildings sit below the surrounding ground. From the edge of the site, one main temple and three subsidiary temples can be read as a single arrangement. Its discovery in 1966, when a farmer was working the land, opened the way for archaeological research and restoration completed in 1987. Looking at the buildings together with the surrounding stonework invites reflection on the archaeological work that brought them back into view. The complex’s Shaivite Hindu background helps explain its purpose, while interpretation at the site can guide a closer reading of its details.
